"He picks up a candle and walks down into the basement of the building. Sixty detectives always sleep here, and a group of them are playing cards when we come into the room. I follow  him as he walks quickly to the far end of the basement. It is dark and frightening and there is a very bad smell...."

This story was written on real story that happened in 1878 and which Twain, the author, read about in the newspaper. 
The white elephant was going to send as a gift to British Queen, but it was stolen when it was carrying in New York...

This book says 'white elephant' means unwanted gift. Knowing this meaning, I felt the structure more clearly. Also, it is said comedy, but I could not say it was comedy. I will read again to analyze into the story.
